Ethics of Fighting - Opinions Welcomed
AKA The Grand Wizard

I have decided to poll the audience on the ethics of fighting in Larkinor.

First of all I believe that what ever you are ABLE to do is what you are ALLOWED to do. However, there are ethics & opinions involved about what people CHOOSE to do. I pose this central question.

If someone is a lower level than you but they set their rank on "GOD MODE" is a higher level character ethically in his right to attack that person?

Note: Some people say they put themselves on God mode in order to level faster but this baiscally means all of the time despite what they say because we are working towards leveling all of the time. A small minority might simply be arrogant which I believe not to be the case 9 out of 10. Also note that some people strive to acheive fame points for their personal satisfaction (acknowledging there is no real point for them but for this) and I see no problem with that especially since there are "lists" to glorify these achievements.

What say you all? Should we declare war on the mortals who say they're Gods. Should people know their role and be "shy" knowing they are ants to those who are above them? Is it the "risk" Gods take? What are other ethical questions?

in my opinion, since the default setting is "shy", a player that puts itself on "god" has knowingly takin the risks that come with that setting... more monsters, quicker leveling and the chance of being attached by higher level characters. Is it ethical and moral to demolish them at any and all chance's... yes. The saying goes, 'if you can't stand the heat, get out of the fryin pan'. And if they really were 'god's' of the game, they would be able to beat those of us that are higher level and able to attch them.
I call it "Free XP" (stolen from Veriac ;) )

I have been known to smack a much lower character around every once in a while for the fun of it, and I have been smacked around quite a bit by higher ranking players than me, too. I don't see any ethical problem with this. Maybe it isn't exactly fair, by life, and Larkinor, aren't always fair.
Might makes right. But you'll have a bunch more fun if you try "might make friends" instead.

Sandy
Anybody who sets their level to allow pvp combat is openly inviting it. My 24th level digger with level 5 magic was just attacked by level 8 Jacob Joseph jr. Another seeker of easy fame points you think - another hard working digger bites the dust...well fortunately for me he forgot to bring his weapons and his unarmed attacks did nothing to my unarmoured mole. He died with me having 2 manapoints remaining
*Bops The Grand Wizard over the noggin with his trusty crowbar.

Ettics....ethecs...effect...etha..ah forget it..none of those here.

Call it the law of the jungle..the law of natural sucession..the law of my pointy stick's bigger than yours, but almost everyone when they see a lower level character on God mode will attack if theres a little red arrow there to click, and the reasons always the same.."because I can!"
The "I'm only on God trying to level" doesnt hold water as theyre trying to get more top end monsters to gain xp quicker, theyre also gonna get more top end players saying "hello mini god". Also lets face it the vast majority of people that play on God are on it all the time.
I fully expect anyone that can to attack my characters on God mode, and I'll do likewise....it keeps us all humble (ish) ;)

Cinder.
For those who just feel that they MUST attack all who they see on 'GOD mode'.... please, attack MagicRose, she is only lvl 28 and a digger. REALLY - trust me on that one <trying desperately to look innocent and helpless - stop laughing Cinder>

When you attack lower level players who are on 'GOD' mode, you most often gain only 1 fame point. I don't find that it is worth it since I'm getting so little out of it. To maximize famepoints, you have to attack 'above' you.
Thank you all for justifying my urge to bolt these halflings. Now when they have any sorrow words I can point them to this thread right before I kill them.

Besides, I am tired of losing too many close battles with vamping higher level characters that are quicker than my Gran Wizard.
Well I believe it is dishonorable to attack a players characters when that player ahs made it plain he doesn't want to do PvP. THis comes under ethics I believe.
And since it has been made plain to me that It is wrong for me to think this way, I will in the next few days be Deleting and leaving this game.
Sorry all those that do like me but I just can not handle this garbage. "It is all part of the Game! So lighten up!" Isn't working for me.
In short, I believe that most of you that do not have the strong belief in ethics or in Honor are also in real life dishonorable.
That you will in real life Steal, Rob, take drugs and do that which is Bad.
Not a good message to be sending to the y9ounger players of Larkinor Quest now is it?

Jaird
> That you will in real life Steal, Rob, take drugs and do that which is Bad.

This is shocking. You need a psychiatrist. I realize that there's no point in telling you "it's just a GAME", because you don't seem to be willing or able to make the distinction... but that's EXACTLY the point you're missing.

Don't you realize that pretty much EVERYTHING we do in Larkinor is either immoral or illegal in the real world from at least someone's perspective? How have you made it as far as you have in this game without realizing that?! Are we to presume from your equating of game activity to real life activity that you go about killing sailors and city guards in your home town frequently?

The above is obviously for Jaird, the following is a general answer to the question to the post and is not directed specifically at anyone:

I don't believe there is ANYTHING you can do in this game that is "unethical" when using a Larkinorian definition. If you CAN do it and WANT to do it and the game designers made it so that you COULD do it, GO FOR IT. Without fail, there is a balance somewhere within the game mechanics to make sure that it's not an abusable strategy.

Kill would-be-gods, steal from your friends, rob the same person over and over, buy and relist under-priced market items, bump over-priced items from the market, etc. It's all okay by the rules, so it's all okay with me. I don't try to DO all of those things, but I have done them all, and all of them have been done to me.

It's a balance, and it's fun.

Sandy

Wow... Was that guy Jaird serious? It looks like somebody is totally not "jell'n".

:)
lol :). Enough telling us you're leaving.. and leave..
I just think it's a waste of time/clicks attacking lower level characters. You get more XP and some useable stuff from monsters. It's also kind of boring knowing you'll win.

With that said my characters are almost always on god or formidable, and they get beat up alot, and I haven't lost any sleep over it.
I just killed two lower level characters today.

I think that they are high enough (around 20) level that they cant claim ignoramus. SO no biggy right? They wanted to be slaughtered.

I only got a fame either way so it was a bit of a waste of time. Probly a lot funner for me then the guys who got a wax job. But if they walk around like that all the time they should be use to it. And they still keep playing, so obviously it dont ruin the game for them.

my 2 cents.

By the way I hadnt played for a year until yesterday. MisterSan is back, for now.

Except a lot of you cats have gotten way higher in level and so such.
I'm a low level character with god mode on all the time.
I'm level 31, going on 32. i put on god mode to level faster.

i don't mind when high level people attack me. I think we should be a good sport about it---after all, it's just a game, and we know the risk when we put on god mode, right?

God mode has it's advantages and disadvantages. One setting him/herself to this state recognises these, and accepts the single disadvantage of being engaged by a higher level-or similar, but devestatingly powerful character in exchange for the other benefits. If someone regards this unjust, then there's always a character page, where the state can be reduced, thus the character becoming a less invitative target to others. The choice is given and free to anyone.

Hmmm, I forgot something. Yesterday I attacked someone, who immediatly asked "why?". Whilst playing, I usually concentrate on loosing my daily clicks as fast as possible, but afterwards whilst going home, or doing anything not in relation with Larkinor, I think about the things that occured previously in the game. This time it was about the "why"-s.

It sort of came down to me that here in the english version, lots of players take it as a major, unhuman offence when they are engaged in a PvP. Or at least, they think that the attacker dislikes the targeted player and simply wants to cause her/him a bad day. But, this_is_NOT in all cases so. Especially not in my case. I am simply a "duel-addicted maniac"-along with a few other players-who have no intention of making bad relations with everyone we attack. We simply want to bring the maximum out of our duel-oriented characters, just for the fun of it. Just as robbers rob, stealers steal, monstalogists transport monsters, diggers dig, and conquesters annihilate the Artinian armies. In the special case of god-mode opponents, we simply see an opportunity-instead of meaning an aimed offence to that player. It's all part of the game-and if used wisely, the chat during the PvP can brighten up both sides for the rest of the day.

I understand that in most of the cases, PvP's can be annoying, but they are much more rare than thieving and robbing. And unless being challenged and defeated in the middle of doing a mission(and loosing hundreds of clicks), the consequences are much less severe. And as for robbing and stealing-the more "mature" part of the community has learned to accept(and even enjoy...:)) it. I don't see why it can't be so with the duels. It's just_part_of_Larkinor!

Couple of things.....

I often ask 'why?' when the player is going to get killed in only one or two attacks. Why attack a player that is 30 levels higher? I also ask 'why' when someone attacks my digger (level 'shy') because it is such a waste of clicks, but I really don't care other than the inconvenience of refreshing hitpoints/manapoints and returning to where I was digging.

Enjoy thieves and robbers? Not likely. I typically log out instantly when I see one. I can't risk 'made' items and rare items on whether or not someone will sell them back to me at 50%. And with the person who has been 'hanging' in the market buying up these items...... Even an 'ethical' thief may not be able to get them back to me. No thank you, I do NOT enjoy thieves/robbers.
^^I don't know about 30 levels, but I sometimes attack characters I have no hope of beating to see how fast they can kill me, how much damage they do vs. how much I do, etc. It only costs a famepoint and I assume they don't mind. :D
Whatever 'floats your boat', but I did so much damage to someone today that he/she did 0 damage to me and was defeated in 1 click. I will occasionally (with lower level characters) attack thieves just so they know that I don't like that they stole from me, but..... you wouldn't believe the # of attacks from people who are 30+ levels below their 'victim'.
I often ask "why" - sometimes just to start a conversation. I can't get into chat on my computer so pvp is my only way of talking to people in the game (as that sort of time wasting is frowned upon clogging up the forums. I think that it is nice to try for a witty oneliner before you die.
Yeah... so I had a very satisfying day today.

"The Grand Wizard" had just leveled (lvl 30, magic 34)and equiped with top of the line armor...

Anyway, I noticed there was an abundant # of lower level Lark players on "God mode". I am talking like 15+ (between lvls 1-29) or something. So I took it upon myself to make a list of all of them and than go down it and absolutely regulate! (insert evil laugh here) Oh my gosh it was soo fun sending these people back to their houses. It was even more interesting to see how many people switched back to "shy mode" after the mauling. I really think i'm making a difference out here for all of you "hard-working/respectful" shy people. I must add that as someone previously posted, it was really a mutual good time in the battles. Some of the 2-line convos I had were pretty funny. I recommend being witty when you are about to kill someone (i.e. I toasted a player who had the name "half sandwich" or something like that and seriously went off about how I was going to eat him and that I wanted my cup of soup etc.) Anyway, for those of you on shy mode working your way up the ranks, know there are crazy people like me who are going to regulate on Lark's pre-madonnas. P.S. If any of the real God's find me on "God mode" and attack I will be the first to say "congrats on the assault...you got me". It's only right. But just know that real a massacre took place today of
Chuck Norris
 proportions.

~Gran Wizard
If you're on god, you are asking to be attacked, so no point complaining afterwards. There would be no attack arrow if you were on a different rank in the first place ;) Camping cc for a few hours, why would you want to miss a chance to attack when a reasonable red arrow presents itself. Another area, i know how frustrating it is for my diggers to get attacked, so i dont believe in attacking other diggers unless being stolen off.
Am I the only one that thinks ETHICS and FIGHTING don't belong in the same sentance?? all's fair in love, war, and merciless slaughter of people on god mode that know they're gonna get crunched
