Suddenly sound effects are turned on, and I can’t seem to be able to find the sound in settings any longer. Has that been taken away? Do we just have to turn off all sound on the device we are playing on?

It's still there... When in-game, you can find the speaker icon (🔈) at the bottom left corner of the screen. Just click it to turn sound effects on or off. No need to mute your entire device.
