The points you receive or lose always depend on your opponent's rating. 
If you win against someone with a higher score than you, you’ll get more points than if you win a lower-rated player.
Likewise, if you lose to someone with fewer points, you’ll lose more points than you would against a stronger opponent.

Scoring can definitely feel a bit mysterious at times, but it actually follows a set system based on your rating, your opponent’s rating, and the type of win or loss (e.g., gammon, backgammon).
